Donate to honor Richard Willson's Exemplary Career in Urban Planning

Richard Willson, a leading transportation planning expert and educator who inspired and guided generations of students toward rewarding work in the planning profession, died unexpectedly on December 6, 2022. He was 66.

Willson joined the College of Environmental Design (ENV) in 1986 as faculty in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP), where he served until his untimely death. He served one year as interim dean of ENV (2002-2003), and three terms as URP's department chair (1994-2000, 2004-08 and 2012-16).

Willson’s academic and professional contributions were recognized in 2015 when he received the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities. He was inducted in 2008 to the prestigious American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) College of Fellows for his outstanding achievement in mentoring and teaching.

In honor of Willson’s exemplary career, URP is establishing a fund for the projects that Rick was pursuing including converting his published book “Guide for the Idealist” to open access which will benefit all current, past and future students in urban planning and related fields.
